Albertine Press was conceived in 2005 by Shelley Barandes, a sometime-architect and paper fanatic with connections to printing that run deep — grandfathers and great-grandfathers on both sides were printers and press operators.
It was her grandmother’s lessons about the importance of a hand-written card that instilled a deep appreciation for the value of a thoughtful note.
With designs ranging from classic and elegant to witty and irreverent, Shelley’s work is inspired by a love of the urban architectural experience, gestural minimalism, and playful puns.
artisanal craftsmanship, thoughtful design
At Albertine, we operate our vintage equipment using the same centuries-old techniques and keen eye for detail as past generations, enhanced with a touch of modern technology. As letterpress artists, we apply ink to raised type and images, then press them into the paper to create the tactile impression that is the modern hallmark of the process.
delightfully curated finds, with heart
In addition to products made by us right here in the studio, customers can discover an ever-changing assortment of cards, gifts, and curiosities sourced from other small, independent makers like ourselves. Browsing our shelves, physically or virtually, you’ll find beautiful, practical goods that support local-makers, women-owned businesses, sustainable living, and thoughtful gifting.
Our studio attracts creative spirits who work with their hands—calligraphers, painters, ceramicists, designers, and doodlers. Most are also obsessed with paper and all love coming to work everyday.
