From classic and elegant to witty and irreverent - Albertine Press is a Boston-area design and letterpress print shop run by Shelley Barandes, a sometime-architect who just loved paper more.
What began as a custom design and print studio has grown to include a full collection of greeting cards, note sets, coasters and journals available at stationery stores and gift boutiques across the country. In addition, we continue to work closely with individuals on custom printing projects, from wedding invitations to business collateral, broadsides to artists' books.
Whether you're a newly-engaged couple searching for just the right wedding invitation, a business looking for that distinctive touch to your stationery, a designer seeking a printshop collaboration, or a retail store wishing to expand your selection of unique cards, the exquisite texture and quality of our finished work is certain to make an impression!
Our shop in Somerville is home to many antique presses of varying vintage and function; table top platens for demonstrations, Heidelberg Windmills for large scale production, a C&P "jobber" we use for die cutting, and a lovely little Vandercook #4 proof press. Our inks are hand-mixed and many of our machines are hand-fed. However, we take full advantage of motorized presses and photo-polymer plates, marrying centuries-old techniques with modern technology.
Letterpress is the oldest mechanized printing method, enjoying a renewed appreciation by both artisans and paper-lovers alike. A relief-printing technique, raised forms are inked and then pressed against (and often into) the paper. While old-school printers would moan and groan over the "printing for the blind" in vogue today, it is that very impression that sets letterpress apart.
Nearly all of our work is printed on 100% cotton paper. Though we chose it for its pillowy texture and thickness (and the beautiful way it takes an impression), cotton paper has the added benefit of being eco-friendly. Absolutely no trees were harmed in the creation of this paper!
